Maggie May is the song that is co-written by singer and songwriters Rod Stewart and Martin Quittenton. The song was recorded for the album Every Picture Tells A Story by Rod Stewart, which was released in 1971. Rolling Stones magazine ranked this song at 130th position in their 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time. In addition to this, in 2017, Maggi May was once again released by Rod Stewart under the label of Mercury Records, and the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Maggie May's lyrics represent the feeling of a boy who falls in love with a woman who is older than him. It's a song written by Stewart's personal experience as he, in one of the interviews, described this song as a true story about the first woman he had sex with back in 1961 while attending the Beaulieu Jazz Festival. The name of the woman was not Maggie May; the singer said the name was taken from an old song.
It took Stewart only two takes to record this song; drummer Micky Waller thought that during the recording session, a drum kit would be provided to him by the studio, but for Maggie May, there were no cymbals to be found with the drum kit. As a result, the cymbal crashes had to be overdubbed over the song after its recording was complete.
The song went on to become a number one hit in the UK Single Chart for straight five weeks. At the same time, it also topped in Australian Charts where the song stayed on the top for 4 weeks. In the United States, Maggie May remained on top for five weeks, and was also able to secure no 2 spot on both US Billboard Hot 100 and UK Single Charts.
